Responding to COVID-19

When the virus began raging through Texas we knew we needed to respond.  We began evaluating our projects and partners and looking for ways to help ease the negative financial impact on our neighbors.  In September we began laying the foundation for an eviction right-to-counsel project in Travis County.  Currently, we're working in Travis County Justice of the Peace, Precinct 5 and providing free case evaluations to everyone facing eviction, as well as free representation to everyone who qualifies.  We're in communication with other courts and looking to expand this project into more courts soon.

Eviction Representation

We believe that everyone facing an eviction has the right to an attorney.  We spend much of our time defending clients in eviction lawsuits, and are currently working to establish an eviction right-to-counsel project in Travis County.  In addition to representing our clients, we're also partnering with Travis County Justice of the Peace, Precinct 5 and providing free case evaluations to everyone facing eviction, as well as free representation to everyone who qualifies.

Class C Representation

We represent clients charged with Class C Misdemeanors to prevent them from going to jail and to get the fines and court costs waived or reduced.

Everyone has watched a cop show and heard the line "if you can't afford a lawyer, one will be appointed for you."

That's not whole truth.

In reality, you only have the right to an attorney if you're being charged with a crime that could result in you serving jail time.  The problem with this is that there are other charges that only result in fines, but too many people still go to jail for these charges when they miss court dates or can't afford to pay their fines.  What's more, if only there was an attorney working on the case defending against these charges then (1) the clients would need to show up to court because the attorney would be there in their place-which is exactly what happens when people with more resources hire an attorney for these charges-and (2) the attorney would be able to get the fines and fees waived or reduced.

Consumer Protection

We represent clients being taken advantage of in consumer transactions and preyed upon because of their financial hardships.  Too often our clients get taken advantage of in a variety of ways, from landlords not returning security deposits, being sued by debt collectors, or shady salespeople leading them to believe they're buying one thing while selling them something different.
